Chub AI, still widely called Venus, has the deepest character card library anywhere and this page says so. But it is built for power users, and if you just want your favourite cards to work without managing models, keys and multi-month billing, there is a simpler way to run them.
What Chub does well
Credit where it is due. If a character card exists anywhere, it is probably on Chub. Its lorebook system is the strongest in the category for long-running world building, and model handling is unusually open: you can use Chub's own hosted models or bring an API key from an outside provider. For experienced roleplayers who enjoy tuning every setting, it is hard to beat.
The catch is everything around the cards
The free tier is thin. It is commonly cited at around 59 messages before a subscription or an API key is needed.
The hosted plans are layered. The larger in-house models need Mars at about $20 a month. The cheaper Mercury plan at about $5 has been reported withdrawn in mid 2026, so check the current plans before paying.
Billing catches people out. Payments are reported to process in multi-month blocks rather than monthly, so the first charge can be bigger than the price on the plan.
Bring your own key means a second bill. Many experienced users skip the plans and connect an outside provider, which keeps Chub free but moves the cost to a per-token bill you manage yourself.
It assumes you know the jargon. Context windows, samplers, presets and proxies are all yours to manage, and stability has drawn more complaints through 2026 than it used to.
