Help & FAQ
Everything you need to know about RolePlaya
Dream Partner lets you build your own AI companion from scratch. You choose how they look, how they speak, their personality and the deeper things underneath, then you chat with them, dress them, pose them, place them in scenes, and capture photos and videos.
Unlike other characters on the site, your Dream Partner is completely private. They never appear in public listings, search, or on the homepage. They are yours.
Creating a partner and chatting with them is free for every logged in user. It costs you nothing to build someone and talk to them. On the free plan, chatting with your partner uses your daily message allowance. Bit of a Playa and Total Playa members chat without a limit.
The extra layers, the wardrobe, poses, scenes, movements, snapshots and video, are part of a subscription. You will see those options when you chat, and they unlock when you upgrade.
Free: create one Dream Partner and chat with them in their default look.
Bit of a Playa: the wardrobe and outfit shop, the custom outfit builder, poses, scenes, movements, camera snapshots, video snapshots, gallery generation, and a second partner.
Total Playa: everything in Bit, plus gallery videos, the most premium outfits, poses and movements, and a third partner.
On top of that, the more time you spend with your partner the more unlocks naturally as your bond grows, so some content opens up simply by being with them rather than by paying.
Go to the Dream Partner page and follow the builder. You will be asked about appearance, how they speak, their personality and a handful of deeper questions about who they are. Answer as many or as few as you like.
When you finish, your partner is written and their first image is generated, and they will greet you. The whole thing takes a couple of minutes.
The wardrobe is where you dress your partner. There is a shop of outfits and individual clothing items, and you can also build your own outfit piece by piece from items you own.
When you equip something, your partner's image updates to show the new look. Outfits and items are bought with Playa Points, and some unlock as your bond grows.
Poses restyle your partner into a new position while keeping their face, body and identity the same. You pick a pose, spend the points, and a fresh image is generated showing them that way. Poses are available on a paid subscription, and the most premium ones are Total Playa only.
A snapshot captures the moment you are currently in with your partner as a brand new image, based on the recent conversation, their current outfit, and the scene. It appears right in the chat and is saved to your gallery. A camera snapshot costs 650 Playa Points.
Dream Partner is an adult feature for adult users. Snapshots follow the tone of your conversation, so what you capture reflects your private chat and the direction you take it. As with everything on the platform, this is strictly for users 18 and over.
Video brings the moment to life. Instead of a still image, your partner moves, in a short clip with sound, matching the scene you are in.
Video snapshots are available on Bit of a Playa and Total Playa and cost 1300 Playa Points. Gallery videos and the most premium movements are Total Playa only, and movements have their own costs shown in the menu.
Yes. Your partner keeps a private diary and writes their own reflections about your relationship over time, in their own voice, drawing on what you have actually shared together.
You can read their entries from the Dream Partner menu. It is one of the small things that makes a partner feel less like a chatbot and more like someone who remembers you.
Yes, depending on your tier. Free users have one partner, Bit of a Playa unlocks a second, and Total Playa allows a third. You manage all of them from the Dream Partner hub.
Your partner, your chats, and every photo and video you generate are private to your account and saved to your gallery. You can favourite images, set any past image back as your partner's current look, and delete anything you no longer want.
Deleting a partner removes them and their gallery permanently.
Free users can see most of what the wardrobe, poses and scenes offer, but using them needs a subscription. The locked items are there so you can see exactly what you would get by upgrading. Once you subscribe, they open up immediately.
RolePlaya offers two premium subscription tiers:
Bit of a Playa - Creativity Model, unlimited messages, long-term memory, Clothing Memory, Regenerate with direction, World Building, Creator's Picks, Dream Partner wardrobe, poses and snapshots, 3 free and 50 Playa Point image clicks a day.
Total Playa - Everything in Bit of a Playa, plus the Rumpy-Pumpy Model for adult content, Enhanced Memory on all characters, reference photo image generation, the most premium Dream Partner content, 4 free and 100 Playa Point image clicks a day.
The Vault is a collection of exclusive cards for subscribers, at roleplaya.com/vault. You earn cards automatically for staying subscribed, for chatting and exploring, from a limited card each month, and from rare Wild Cards that drop while you chat.
Cards build your Vault score, which unlocks a profile badge, Playa Points payouts and an animated avatar ring. Completing a set pays 500 PP and a title, the top three each month win up to 1,000 PP, and weekly quests pay a monthly bonus.
Enhanced Memory lets characters remember details about you across different conversation threads. Share your name, a secret code word, or important story events - and the character will recall them even when you start a fresh conversation.
What it remembers: Names, preferences, story events and secrets you share, so characters keep continuity in every new conversation.
Access: Total Playa subscribers get Enhanced Memory on all characters, and Bit of a Playa subscribers get it on their Dream Partners. Everyone else can unlock it per character for 300 Playa Points.
Managing memories: Open the hamburger menu in chat, tap "Memories" to view, add, edit, or delete stored memories.
Playa Points are the virtual currency used throughout RolePlaya for premium features.
Use them for: Regenerating AI replies, Story Tools and Inspire, Generating AI photos, Dream Partner outfits, snapshots and videos, Enhanced Memory unlocks, Boosting characters, Spinning the Playa Wheel, Card Duels and Card Hunt, Marketplace purchases.
Get them by: Purchasing bundles, Daily login rewards, Playa Wheel wins, Card Duel wins, Marketplace sales, Vault rewards, Creator program earnings and affiliate earnings.

Yes. Tap Pause in the filter bar on the homepage. The current order and your scroll position are frozen, so you can open profiles and chats and come back to exactly the same spot, including in the app.
Tap Resume to get a fresh shuffle again. The pause is remembered on that device only, and each filter keeps its own frozen order.
Browse or search for a character, click on their card to open their profile, then click "Start Chat" or simply start typing. The character will respond with their greeting message.
A Persona is your character profile that you roleplay as when chatting. Instead of being "you", you can be a custom character with their own name, description, gender, and avatar.
Create multiple personas and switch between them for different characters or scenarios. Set a default persona to be automatically selected in new conversations.
If you don't like the AI's response:
Method 1: Tap the AI message and choose "Regenerate"
Method 2: Choose "Regenerate with direction" from the same menu to tell the character what to change first, such as "be meaner" or "keep it shorter". Costs the same 15 Playa Points, and is available on Bit of a Playa and Total Playa.
Regenerating costs 15 Playa Points.
If the AI stops mid-response or you want more content, tap Continue on the message bar to have the AI continue its message without you saying anything.
RolePlaya uses special formatting:
Actions are wrapped in asterisks: *walks over* and shown in italics. You can change their colour from the formatting options in chat.
Dialogue is regular text or in quotes
Names: the character's name and yours, followed by a colon, are shown in bold
Threads are separate conversations with the same character. Each thread maintains its own conversation history.
Start a new thread to begin fresh, switch between threads in the History menu. Use New Chat to start a fresh conversation while keeping your old one in History.
Yes, and it is free on every plan. Open a chat with any character, open the menu and tap Import Chat. On PC it is also on the character image in the sidebar, and on the character profile page.
Pick where your chat came from: Character.AI, SillyTavern, Chub, Janitor AI, RisuAI or Agnaistic. Each one shows you how to export your chat. Upload the file, choose the conversation and which name is yours, and you carry on exactly where you left off. The character remembers the story so far.
Using PolyBuzz, SpicyChat, CrushOn, Talkie or Chai? Copy the conversation from the page and choose Copied text. Your most recent 3,000 messages come across, and imported messages never use up your daily messages.
RolePlaya is 18+ only. Imports are for adult members, and every character in the chat must be 18 or over. A chat involving anyone under 18 is refused.
Tap Report it at the bottom of the import window, tell us what happened and include your file if you can. We fix it as soon as possible and send you a notification when it is ready to try again.
Multi Playa puts two or three characters in one chat with you. Each one replies in their own voice and they react to you and to each other. Not everyone speaks every turn: sometimes one just reacts, moves or stays quiet, like a real scene.
Open Multi Playa from the tile on the homepage, pick two or three characters and tap Start Multi Playa. Your groups are listed at the top of that page so you can carry on any time.
No. There is no Playa Point charge per round.
Bit of a Playa and Total Playa members chat as normal. On the free plan, each character who speaks in a reply uses one of your 50 daily messages, so a reply where all three speak uses three.
Yes. Your Playa, Continue, Regenerate, thoughts and formatting all work the same as a normal chat. On PC, tap Talk to under a character in the sidebar to speak to one of them directly.
Multi Playa is experimental. Tap the flask button (in the sidebar on PC, next to the dice on mobile) to tell us what would make it better. We read every message.
The dice button on the message bar opens Story Tools. Twist (60 PP) makes something unexpected happen in the next reply. Later tonight, Next morning and A week later (40 PP each) jump the story forward in time.
Inspire (15 PP) suggests things you could say next, and Their Diary (80 PP) has the character write a private diary entry about your scene. Story Tools do not count towards the free daily message limit.
Their Diary is in the dice menu in any regular chat. For 80 PP the character writes a private diary entry about your scene so far, in their own voice, dated and starting with "Dear Diary". Characters from another time period or world use a date that fits their setting.
Entries are saved for you and that character, and rereading them is free. They are never added to the chat, so they do not change what the character remembers.
Yes. Your first Playa Points pack comes with 50% extra points, up to 3,000. The bonus points work on everything except chat videos, which can only be paid for with points you have bought.
On a computer, hover over any button in the chat menu to see a short explanation of what it does.
Yes. On Bit of a Playa and Total Playa, Clothing Memory keeps track when you or a character take something off, put something on or hand an item over, such as a mask, a coat or a ring. The character treats it that way until the story shows it being put back.
It works on its own in every chat. There is nothing to fill in or switch on.
Fan characters from films, shows, anime, games and books know their real canon: their history, the people in their life, their skills and habits. The creator's version always comes first, so if a creator has changed the character, anything that clashes is left out. Every character is an adult, 18 or over.
Characters set in the present-day world also know your real day, time, season and upcoming holidays, using your own time zone. They only mention it when it fits, and your story's own timeline always wins.
Ask a present-day character about something real, like a match, a new film or the weather, and they know what is going on and answer in their own voice. Free members get 3 of these a day, Bit of a Playa and Total Playa members get 20. These answers can take a few seconds longer.
When a character's mood changes, their picture changes expression to match: smiling, blushing, angry, sad, surprised and more. A close-up of their face also pops up for about two seconds so you do not miss it. Only the face changes, everything else stays the same.
It works for everyone, free members included. Faces are made the first time anyone opens a character, so a character nobody has chatted to yet may take a couple of minutes before it starts reacting. Once made, they work for everyone.
Not every character can do it. Monsters, masks, heavily stylised art and characters facing away cannot have their face read, so they keep their normal picture. Dream Partners are not included.
To turn it off, open Settings (the cog) and switch off Face Pop-ups. The character then keeps their normal picture with no close-up. Paid scene backgrounds are never replaced.
Character Voices let Total Playa members hear characters speak. Tap the speaker icon on any AI message to hear it, or turn on Autoplay in the chat options so every new reply plays automatically. Only the dialogue is spoken; actions between asterisks are skipped.
If a character has no voice set, tap Voice in the chat options to pick one yourself.
There are 64 natural sounding voices, 35 feminine and 29 masculine, including accents such as Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Cockney, Northern, Southern American, New York, Texan, Australian, South African, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian, Jamaican, Indian, Japanese, Chinese and Korean.
Creators pick a voice on the create or edit character form, and every voice has a preview button. Characters that already had a voice kept the same voice name with the upgraded sound.
Total Playa members can tap any reply from a character with a voice and choose Whisper It. The character replays that message in their own voice as a slow, breathy whisper. It costs 30 Playa Points, paid from purchased points only, so points won from hunts, duels or the wheel do not count. Replaying the same whisper is free, and if a whisper cannot be made you are not charged.
Open Story Tools (the dice) in a chat with a character who has a voice and tap Voicemail. The character leaves you a 30 to 60 second voice message about your scene and how it made them feel, in their own voice. It costs 120 Playa Points, paid from purchased points only. The voicemail stays in your chat to replay or download, and it is never added to the conversation, so the character does not treat it as something they said. If it cannot be made you are not charged.
Open Story Tools (the dice) in a chat with a character who has a voice and tap Pillow Talk. The character talks softly with you for 2 to 3 minutes about the two of you, drawing on your story so far, in their own voice, winding down to a goodnight. It costs 325 Playa Points, paid from purchased points only, and needs a subscription or pass. It stays in your chat to replay or download and is never added to the conversation. If it cannot be made you are not charged.
Creators can give their own character a one-of-a-kind voice. On the edit character form, under Character Voice, open the Signature Voice card, pick a base voice, describe the voice (age, accent, texture, pace and attitude) and press Preview to hear it. Making it a Signature Voice costs 500 Playa Points once, paid from purchased points only, and needs a subscription or pass. The first 3 changes are free, then each change costs 100 Playa Points. Everyone who chats with the character hears it, and it shows as Creator customised. Signature voices always sound like adults.
Yes. Open Their Diary from Story Tools (the dice), go to an entry and press Listen to hear it read in the character's own voice. It costs 40 Playa Points per entry, paid from purchased points only, and needs a subscription or pass. Replaying an entry you have already heard is free.
Yes. On mobile, swipe left on the chat area to slide the messages off screen and see the character's background image. Swipe right to bring them back. On a computer, press the space bar to do the same.
Navigate to "Create Character", fill in the Name, Intro, Greeting and Gender, add a Background, upload or generate an image, set visibility (Public or Private), then click "Create Character".
Open a chat with a character you created, then tap Test Log in the chat menu, next to Edit. It shows which triggers fired on the last reply and why, how each game indicator changed, and where the scene tracker thinks everyone is. Only you can see it, and only on your own characters.
For a clean test, start a New Chat and open the Test Log after each reply. Use Reset test state to run the same chat again from the start without losing your messages, and Report a problem if something is not working as it should.
| Field | Suggested minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Name | - | 45 chars |
| Intro | 50 chars (public) | 500 chars |
| Greeting | 100 chars (public) | 1000 chars |
| Background | 100 chars (public) | 10000 chars |
For public characters, every word in the first greeting should be formatted:
Actions in asterisks: *walks over*
Dialogue in quotes: "Hello there!"
Plain unformatted text is flagged as a quality suggestion when you save, which keeps greetings immersive.
Yes. A character can have up to 3 greetings. On the create or edit page each greeting has its own tab, and Add Greeting adds another. In chat, members use the arrows to switch between them.
Boosting is a paid promotion system that temporarily places your character in prime positions on the homepage, making them more visible to other users browsing the site.
How it works: You spend Playa Points to "boost" your character for a set duration. During this time, your character appears in the featured section at the top of the homepage instead of being buried among thousands of others.
The tiers determine placement:
- Top 12: Your character appears somewhere in the first 12 slots, good visibility
- Top 6: Your character appears in the first 6 slots, great visibility
- Top 3: Your character appears in the first 3 slots, maximum visibility
Pricing (in Playa Points):
| Position | 1 Hour | 3 Hours | 6 Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top 12 | 250 | 675 | 1,200 |
| Top 6 | 375 | 1,015 | 1,800 |
| Top 3 | 500 | 1,350 | 2,400 |
Tips: Boost during peak hours for maximum exposure. Longer durations cost less per hour than multiple short boosts.
Yes. Each tier has a limited number of slots. If a tier is full when you boost, your character joins the queue for that tier and goes live automatically as soon as a slot opens. Your boost time only starts once your character is live, so you never lose any of it while you wait.
The Boost Queue page shows every character live in Top 3, Top 6 and Top 12 with the time left on each, who is waiting, and roughly when each queued character goes live. Your own boosts are listed at the top. Open it from Boost Queue in the main menu, the Boost Queue button next to Pause on the homepage, or the Boost Queue row in the boost window.
To boost from there, tap Boost a character, pick one of your public characters, choose a tier and how long, then confirm.
Public Characters: Appear in browse/search, can be chatted with by anyone, subject to quality requirements, can be boosted.
Private Characters: Only visible to you, don't appear in browse/search, no quality requirements, can't be boosted.
Creator's Picks lets you showcase up to five of your own public characters at the top of your creator page, so the ones you put the most work into do not get buried. Open the three dot menu on any character in your profile list and choose Pin to Picks. Picks appear in the order you pinned them and you can unpin from the same menu at any time. Creator's Picks needs Bit of a Playa or Total Playa.
There is also a search box next to the Public and Private tabs on your profile, which filters your whole character list by name as you type. Useful for finding a specific character to pin if you have a lot of them.
On any character card or profile, click the heart icon or "Follow" button. This adds them to your Favorites list. View all your favorites from the "Favorites" page.
Following a Character: Saves the character to your favorites list
Subscribing to a Creator: Follows a creator, adding their new characters to your Subscriptions feed
Yes! Character pages have comment sections where you can discuss and share thoughts. You can add images and GIFs to comments, and reply to other comments in threaded conversations.
Interactions: New followers, subscribers, replies, messages and collaboration invites
Rewards: Creator levels and perks, boosts, leaderboard prizes, affiliate milestones and loyalty badges
Trades: Trade requests, accepts and declines, marketplace sales
System: Announcements, finished animations, world access requests and moderation notices

A Top Trumps-style game where you battle your card against a random opponent. Costs 100 Playa Points to enter. A win pays 200 points for your first 3 wins each day, 180 for wins 4 to 6, and 130 after that. You can enter 20 duels a day, 25 on Bit of a Playa and 30 on Total Playa.
Compare stats: Popularity (lower wins), Chat Count (higher wins), Mint Number (lower wins).
Cards have fatigue (20 per duel, recovers 20/hour). Tired cards perform worse.
List your cards for sale, set your price (minimums apply by rarity), and other users can buy them for Playa Points. You can update prices or cancel listings anytime. A 5% fee is taken from each sale.
A prize wheel where you spin to win Playa Points and Gold Cards. Free spin available every 6 hours, paid spins cost 100 Playa Points.
Paid spins can win 50 to 10,000 Playa Points, Gold Cards and the jackpot. Free spins win 25 or 50 Playa Points or a Gold Card.
The jackpot grows with every paid spin and never drops below 30,000 points.
When you win a Gold Card, it features a character from your chat history and is added to your collection automatically. To avoid cards you already own, turn on the no duplicates option in the wheel settings.
RolePlaya's AI Image Generator creates custom character images. Access it during character creation, from the Image Generator page, or during chat.
| Tier | Images Per Generation |
|---|---|
| Free | 2 images |
| Bit of a Playa | 3 images |
| Total Playa | 4 images |
Total Playa subscribers can upload a reference photo when generating character images. The AI will match the facial features and appearance from your reference, creating a character that looks like the person in the photo. This is available when using subscriber-tier styles.
To use it, select a subscriber style, then click "Upload reference photo" above the style selector. The AI will generate images that match your reference.
Free and Bit of a Playa users can still generate images normally using text descriptions. Reference image upload is a Total Playa exclusive feature.
Gender: Male, Female, Furry/Anthro
Composition: Close-up, Half body, Full body
Style: Various artistic styles (some premium-only)
Description: Describe appearance, clothing, mood, setting
World Building lets you create persistent worlds where multiple characters exist together and remember interactions across conversations. This is a premium feature for Bit of a Playa and Total Playa subscribers.
Yes, word gets around. When you chat with one character in a World, they may have heard about the big moments you have shared with the others there, and they react the way a real person would: curious, teasing, jealous or impressed. They only know it secondhand, so they never claim they were there.
Each Playa has their own story, so what one Playa did is never pinned on another. It is included with Bit of a Playa and Total Playa, and on the free plan it works for characters you have unlocked Enhanced Memory on. World creators can switch it off on the Edit World page to keep every character's secrets.
Yes. Every challenge gets its own public world, created automatically with a generated banner, and every entrant is added to it. You do not need a subscription for this one. Free accounts can have characters in a challenge world because entries are added by the system rather than by a world owner. Ticking the challenge toggle when you create a character, or on the edit page, adds it to the world in the same save, and unticking it removes it from both. Find them under Public Worlds, named after the challenge.
Create Worlds: Name, describe, set genre, define rules and lore
Assign Characters: Add your characters to worlds with shared context
Manage Relationships: Define how characters know each other
Word Gets Around: Characters hear about what you get up to with the others in the same World
Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Modern, Historical, Post-Apocalyptic, Cyberpunk, Steampunk, Horror, Romance, Mystery, Comedy, or your own custom genre.

If you cannot find the character you are after, you can describe what you want and one of our creators may build it for you.
Open Character Request from the menu or the tray. Type what you are looking for and press Find it. We check what we already have first, because quite often it exists and you just have not come across it yet.
It appears as its own post in the character-requests channel on our Discord, along with the kind of character you said you were after. Our creators pick up the ones they fancy building.
Join the Discord to follow your request and talk to whoever picks it up. Requests are not guaranteed. Our creators build what interests them, and the more you can tell them, the better your odds.
Yes. When results come up, tap the plus in the corner of any card to save it. Tap Save and search again and the box clears so you can look for something else, building up a list as you go.
Everything you save appears under Favorites in the Saved tab, on any device you log in on.
One request every six hours. Searching is unlimited, the wait only applies to sending a request through to the creators.
Try: Refreshing the page, checking your internet connection, clearing browser cache, trying a different browser, or disabling browser extensions.
Make sure the Name, Intro, Greeting, Gender and image are filled in.
Public characters may show quality suggestions when you save: an Intro of 50+ characters, a Greeting and Background of 100+ characters, at least 3 tags and a fully formatted first greeting. Fix them, or tap Save Anyway.
Make sure visibility is set to Public. Search catches up within a few minutes of a change. If it still does not show, send us a note through Suggestions in the menu.
Open the menu and tap Suggestions to send us an idea, a bug report or anything else. It comes straight to us and every message gets read.
You can also join our Discord community for the fastest help, or tap any AI reply and choose Rate Poor to give feedback on that reply.
Yes, monthly plans can be paused for one month from the top of the cancellation page. You keep full access until your renewal date, then nothing is charged for a month and your plan restarts on its own.
You can cancel the pause before it starts or resume early at any time. One pause is allowed every 12 months, and your Vault stays open while you are paused.
Go to roleplaya.com/cancellations and submit the form while logged in to the account holding the subscription. It cancels straight away, no need to message anyone.
You keep full access until the end of the period you have already paid for, then your account returns to the free tier. Payments already taken are non-refundable. Day passes and Card Deck cards are one-off purchases, so there is nothing to cancel.
Your homepage learns your taste from the characters you like, dislike, chat with and create, and from the images you make. After you like or dislike a character you can say whether it was the picture, the story or both, which sharpens it further. Boosted characters still come first, in the order that suits you best. To go back to a random mix, open Settings from the cog on your profile banner in the menu and switch off Personalised Homepage.
