AI Roleplay Site Reviews: Seven Platforms, October 2026
Reviews of seven AI roleplay platforms by the former number one PolyBuzz creator. What each one actually costs, what actually breaks, and who each one suits. No ratings, no affiliate links.
I am Captain. I was the number one creator on PolyBuzz, close to a thousand characters, 588.5 million messages and over 184,000 collectors, until the platform turned on the people making its content and I left. Nothing I tried afterwards was good enough, so I built RolePlaya. That makes me biased, and it also means I have used every platform on this page properly rather than for an afternoon. No star ratings, no ranking, no affiliate links, and RolePlaya is reviewed last with its faults left in.

Every figure below is unstable. Reputable sites publish flatly contradictory numbers for the same platform in the same month. One SpicyChat review verified at checkout describes an unlimited free tier, another from the same period puts it at 100 messages a day. CrushOn changes its tier names and caps often enough that reviewers openly warn against quoting them at all.
So treat everything here as a starting point and check the live checkout before paying. That instability is not a footnote. These are small companies carrying volatile inference bills, and the cost of generating a message moves underneath them constantly, which is why caps tighten, free tiers shrink and tiers get renamed with no announcement.
| Platform | Entry cost | Adult content | Setup needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character.AI | Free, c.ai+ $9.99/mo | No | None |
| Janitor AI | Free, Janitor+ about $12.99/mo, or bring your own key | Yes, ID verified | API key for the good models |
| PolyBuzz | Free with ads, tiered upgrades | Private only, filtered | None |
| CrushOn AI | Free daily cap, paid from about $5.99/mo | Yes | None |
| SpicyChat | Free, paid from about $5.95/mo | Yes | None |
| Chub AI | Limited free, Mars about $20/mo | Yes | Optional API key |
| RolePlaya | Free (50 messages a day), paid from $9.99/mo | Yes | None |

Character.AI
Still the largest platform in the category by a wide margin, at roughly 20 million monthly users, and still the one with the best uptime and the most polished product. It is also, in 2026, a different product from the one that made it famous.
After its founders returned to Google under a licensing deal in late 2025, the company shifted hard toward monetisation. The free tier now carries full screen ads mid conversation, caps daily regenerations behind an in app currency, and slows noticeably at peak. c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or around $94.99 a year removes the ads and unlocks new models first. Its own subreddit is where you will find long time users describing the free experience in fairly blunt terms.
The other change is structural. From 25 November 2025, under 18s lost open ended chat entirely, enforced with an in house age model combined with third party verification, and minors were redirected to a structured Stories format. Whatever you make of it, it is the most decisive action anyone in this category has taken on safety, and it followed lawsuits rather than preceding them.
Verdict
Best for: character chat with zero setup, the largest library going, and reliability nothing else here matches.
Deal breaker: the filter. There is no adult content and no route to it. Memory is short for long form roleplay, and the advertising load on the free tier is heavy.

Janitor AI
Janitor is the most technically unusual platform here, and everything good and bad about it follows from one decision: it does not want to pay for your inference. It runs a small in house model, JanitorLLM, free but capped, and for anything better you connect your own API key to an outside provider through what it calls a proxy.
That puts the running cost on your bill rather than theirs, and it also means the platform's most common failure is a configuration problem rather than an outage. A 429 or a bare Network Error is almost always the provider refusing, or a credit balance sitting at zero. There are separate write ups here on what 429 actually means and the wider not working cluster.
In June 2026 it launched Janitor+, its first party subscription, at around $12.99 a month, with a larger memory window than the free model. Adult access on the free tier is gated behind ID verification. Proxy provider prices also move without warning: Chutes pushed increases across several popular models in mid 2026 with no announcement, and the first sign most users got was credit draining faster than usual.
Verdict
Best for: anyone happy to spend twenty minutes on API setup in exchange for frontier model quality at close to raw token cost.
Deal breaker: if you want something that just works, this is the wrong platform. Peak hour instability is real, the error messages are useless, and response quality depends on a third party you also have to manage.

PolyBuzz
PolyBuzz has the largest claimed library in the category and the most aggressive free tier monetisation. Text chat is free and effectively endless, but you meet a break modal every few messages and choose between watching an advert and upgrading. On top of subscriptions sits a coin economy, and the coins expire. That is the complaint that comes up most often from people who use it daily.
Memory is the second. On free and lower tiers older messages get pruned aggressively, which is the source of the recurring posts about chats being deleted. Extended memory is a paid tier feature and full retained history is a top tier feature.
The filter has tightened through 2026. Characters that worked last year now trip violation flags, and the automatic content filtering notice appears more than it used to. That pattern is why I am not there any more. I was the number one creator on the platform and it still ended with violations landing on nearly everything I had made, with no reason ever given for any of them. Working out what was supposedly wrong across close to a thousand characters turned into a daily chore, and clearing them achieved nothing, because the same flags came back the next day and the day after that. That is not moderation, it is attrition. The full account is in why I quit PolyBuzz and built RolePlaya.
One practical detail before subscribing: reviewers report the card statement descriptor reads Singularity Mutual Ent rather than PolyBuzz.
Verdict
Best for: browsing an enormous library on mobile without paying anything.
Deal breaker: the filter is tightening rather than loosening, the coin prompts interrupt constantly, and memory below the top tier is short.

CrushOn AI
CrushOn has the widest gap here between what it offers and how it is run. The feature set is genuinely strong: a deep library, model switching mid conversation, group chat with multiple characters, and a free tier that moved in April 2026 from 100 messages a month to roughly 50 a day, which is a real improvement for anyone logging in daily.
Execution is where it falls down. The recurring complaints from paying users are support that does not reply, models drifting off the character card into generic phrasing during longer sessions, and features listed as included while sitting in closed beta for extended periods. Its Trustpilot score is low across a small number of reviews, weighted heavily to one star.
Privacy is the part worth weighing hardest. Mozilla's Privacy Not Included project assigned CrushOn its WARNING label, the worst outcome in that rating system, after finding a large number of trackers loading almost immediately on the site. Reviewers also disagree about where the company is actually registered, which is not a detail that should be ambiguous.
Verdict
Best for: model switching and group scenes at a low entry price, using a throwaway email.
Deal breaker: support, privacy posture, and tier names that move often enough that nobody can quote them reliably.

SpicyChat
The most straightforward adult platform on the list. No API key, no token economy, a library in the hundreds of thousands, and a free tier that is usable rather than a demo. Paid tiers run roughly $5.95, $19.95 and $29.95 a month since a September 2026 price rise, with discounts for annual billing.
What actually separates those tiers is memory. Context runs from around 4,000 tokens on free up to 16,000 or more at the top, which in practice is the difference between a character losing the scene every few exchanges and holding a thread across a whole session. The two complaints that come up most, short replies and forgetfulness, are both memory problems, and the cheapest paid tier fixes neither. If you are going to pay here, the middle tier is the one that changes the experience.
Group chat and lorebooks landed in 2026, voice sits on the top tier only. Queues during busy periods are the other regular gripe. Statements reportedly show NextDay AI Incorporated.
Verdict
Best for: uncensored roleplay with no setup at a low price, and the most generous free tier of the adult platforms.
Deal breaker: memory on free and entry tiers is too short for long form stories, and you will queue at peak.

Chub AI
Chub, still widely called Venus, is the power user option. It came out of merging a roleplay interface with a public character card repository, and that repository remains the best thing about it. If a character card exists anywhere it is probably here, and the lorebook system makes it the strongest platform in the category for long running world building.
Model handling is unusually open. Mars at about $20 a month unlocks the larger in house models. The cheaper $5 Mercury plan has been reported withdrawn in mid 2026, so check the current plans before paying. Or you bring your own API key and pay an outside provider directly while the platform itself stays free, which is what most experienced users do. Billing catches people out: payments process in multi month blocks rather than monthly, so read the checkout properly before confirming.
The free tier is thin, commonly cited at around 59 messages before a subscription or a key is required. The interface is the least approachable here by some distance, and stability has drawn more complaints through 2026 than it used to.
Verdict
Best for: experienced roleplayers who want model choice, lorebooks and the deepest card library in existence.
Deal breaker: it assumes you already know what a context window is. Newcomers bounce off it, and the billing structure is not what it looks like.

RolePlaya
This is the one I built, so weigh it accordingly. Every claim here is checkable and the faults are left in.
The youngest platform on this list and the smallest. UK based, no API key, no adverts, no coin economy, no token metering. The free tier gives 50 messages a day, and paid plans are $9.99 or $19.99 a month. Subscriptions print as ROLEPLAYA on a bank statement rather than an unrecognisable holding company name, and card details go to Stripe or PayPal without ever touching the site.
The feature set leans toward long form use: persistent memory, multi character scenes, world building, personas, image generation and voice. Characters export as standard V2 and V3 cards that load on other platforms, which matters more than it sounds, because it means leaving is possible and your writing is not held hostage.
The honest weaknesses. The library is small compared to any platform above, because the site is far younger and every card is human made rather than scraped. Support is a very small team, so a busy week shows up as slower replies. Newer features ship rougher than they would with a large engineering department. And in common with everyone else here, when an upstream model provider changes something, output quality moves underneath it.
Verdict
Best for: long running stories with no setup, no ads and no metering, with the ability to export characters and leave.
Deal breaker: a much smaller library than any established competitor, and a support desk measured in people rather than departments.
How to check any of this yourself
The ranked lists that dominate these search results are mostly affiliate placements, and several of them are published by platforms that crown themselves at number one. Rather than trusting any ordering, including this page, four checks will tell you more than a score ever will.
- Search the failure, not the product. Platform name plus refund, charged, cancel, down or banned. What matters is not whether complaints exist, because they exist everywhere, but how many, how old they are, and whether anyone from the platform replied.
- Find the named legal entity. It should be in the terms or the privacy policy. If nobody is named, there is nobody to complain to and a harder time with a chargeback.
- Check for an export. If your characters only exist inside their site, you cannot leave without losing the work.
- Find out what prints on your statement before you pay. Ask it publicly and see whether you get a straight answer.
Outages are worth watching too, since a bad week is more revealing than a good month. There is a running status page covering the platforms above, which exists because when a site goes down mid scene, the first question is always whether it is you or them.
Which AI roleplay platform is best in 2026?
There is no single answer and anyone offering one is selling something. Character.AI for reliability with no adult content, Janitor AI for cheap frontier models if you will configure an API key, SpicyChat for uncensored chat with no setup, Chub for deep world building, CrushOn for model switching, PolyBuzz for a huge free mobile library.
Why do prices differ between review sites?
Because they genuinely move. Platforms in this category change tier names, caps and prices frequently as inference costs shift, and most reviews are never updated after publication. Check the live checkout page before subscribing rather than trusting any published figure, including these.
Which AI roleplay sites allow adult content?
Janitor AI, SpicyChat, Chub AI, CrushOn AI and RolePlaya permit adult roleplay for verified adults. Character.AI does not. PolyBuzz filters public content and applies a lighter but still active filter to private chats, which has tightened through 2026.
Can I move my characters between platforms?
Sometimes. Character cards in the V2 and V3 formats are portable, and any platform that reads those formats will accept the same file. Platforms that only allow creation inside their own editor, with no export, are the ones to be careful about committing long work to.
Is Trustpilot reliable for AI chatbot platforms?
Not on its own. Reviews there are largely solicited, and platforms send the invitation at the point of highest satisfaction, which skews the average before any fake reviews are counted. The useful part is the one and two star reviews and whether the company replied to them.
