Janitor AI Proxy Error 429: Which Limit You Hit, and How to Clear It
Four different limits share one error code. How to tell in under a minute which one you hit, and what actually clears it.
Error 429 is not one problem. It is four different limits wearing the same number, and the fix depends entirely on which one you hit. Here is how to tell them apart in about a minute.
What 429 actually is
429 is the standard HTTP response for "too many requests". The important part is where it comes from. Janitor AI does not run the model. It passes your message to whichever provider you configured, and relays back whatever that provider said. When you see 429, your model provider refused the request and Janitor is the messenger.
That is why generic fixes do nothing. Clearing cookies, switching browser and turning off your VPN all act on the wrong end of the chain.
Work out which limit you hit
| What you saw | Which limit | What clears it |
|---|---|---|
| Fails on the very first message of the day | Daily cap already spent, or a key with no credit behind it | Wait for the reset, or raise the cap |
| Fine for a while, then fails during fast back and forth | Per minute cap | Slow down for sixty seconds |
| Started failing after roughly fifty messages | Daily free model cap | The one-off credit purchase below |
| Only during busy evening hours, comes and goes | Provider side capacity on the shared free pool | Switch model, or wait it out |
| A queue or waiting message instead of a number | JanitorLLM beta capacity, not a rate limit | Nothing you can do from your end |
The two numbers behind most of it
If you are on OpenRouter with a model ID ending in :free, two caps apply. Twenty requests per minute, which does not move no matter what you pay. And fifty requests per day on an account that has never purchased ten dollars of credit.
Buy ten dollars of credit once, at any point ever, and that daily cap rises to a thousand requests and stays there. It is a lifetime unlock rather than a balance requirement, the credits do not expire, and spending them back down to zero does not drop you to the lower tier. Janitor AI's own setup documentation says the same thing, so this is not a workaround, it is the intended path.
Failed requests still count. A generation that errors out has already spent one of your fifty. Hammering the retry button on a failing message is the fastest way to turn a temporary problem into a locked-out day.
Fixes, in order of effort
- Stop retrying. Every retry spends quota you are trying to get back.
- Check the model ID. If it ends in :free you are on the rate-limited pool. If it does not, and you have credits, you are being billed per token instead, which is a different problem with a different fix.
- Wait for the reset. Daily counters roll over at midnight UTC, not at midnight where you are.
- Take the lifetime unlock. Ten dollars once, twenty times the daily headroom, permanently.
- Go direct. Once you know which model you actually like, a key straight from that provider removes one layer from the stack and one thing that can rate limit you.
- Fall back to JanitorLLM. No key, no cost, but it is beta software and the queues at peak are real.
Things that will not fix it
- Lowering context size. Context affects token cost and can cause a 400, but the daily and per minute caps count requests, not tokens.
- Regenerating your API key. The limit follows the account, not the key.
- Editing earlier messages. It does not refund anything you have already spent.
- A VPN. The cap is tied to your provider account.
Before you spend an evening on any of this, it is worth ruling out the simplest cause. Our Janitor AI status page checks the site every fifteen minutes and will tell you whether the problem is on their end.
If the real problem is being locked out of your own story
Everything above is the fix. This part is the honest bit.
This class of error exists because Janitor AI asks you to run the model plumbing yourself. For some people that is the whole appeal, and genuinely so, because you get a level of control no hosted platform can offer. For others it is a tax in attention paid for a feature they never wanted, which is the ability to choose between forty models when what they wanted was for one good one to already be running.
The other way round
RolePlaya runs the models server side. There is no API key to generate, no proxy URL to paste, no billing account to configure, and no 429 to diagnose, because the routing is our problem rather than yours. The free tier has a daily message allowance and no advertising. Paid tiers open more models, longer memory, and the voice and image features.
If you want the longer version of that trade, there is a full Janitor AI comparison here, including what you give up by letting someone else pick the model.
Common questions
Does the ten dollar credit purchase mean I have to keep paying?
No. It is a one-off lifetime unlock. Once your account has ever bought ten dollars of credit, the higher daily limit on free models applies from then on, and the credits themselves do not expire.
Do failed messages count against my daily limit?
Yes. Any request that reaches the provider is counted, whether or not it produced a reply. Repeated retries on one broken message can burn a meaningful share of a fifty request day.
Is the 429 error Janitor AI's fault?
Usually not. Janitor AI relays the response from whichever provider you configured. The limit is set by that provider, and the same key would hit the same limit anywhere else you used it.
Why does it only happen in the evening?
Free model pools are shared capacity. When demand peaks, the provider throttles the free tier before the paid one. The same setup that worked at nine in the morning can fail at nine at night without anything changing on your side.
Does RolePlaya need an API key?
No. Models run server side, so there is nothing to configure and no per token bill. What you trade away is arbitrary model choice.
