Janitor AI Alternative: No API Key, No ID Upload, No Token Bill

The API key tax, the ID verification requirement, and what you trade away by letting someone else run the model.

Janitor AI is a genuinely good product and this page says so. But two things changed recently that a lot of guides still have not caught up with, and if either of them is why you are here, there is a straightforward answer.

The two things that changed

Limitless Mode now requires ID verification. This came in late 2025 and a surprising number of comparison articles still describe Janitor AI as the no-questions-asked option. It is not, any more. If uncensored access matters to you, you are uploading identity documents to get it.

The API key model is not free, it is deferred. Using Janitor AI with your own key costs nothing on the Janitor side, which is how it gets described as the free option. Since June 2026 there is also a first-party subscription, Janitor+, at around $12.99 a month, but the classic setup is still a key you pay for yourself. What actually happens is that you connect your own OpenAI or OpenRouter account and pay per token. Heavy users report somewhere in the region of $20 to $50 a month, and the bill arrives after you have used it rather than before.

Neither of those makes Janitor AI a bad platform. They make it a different deal from the one most people think they are getting.

The setup tax

Everyone who recommends Janitor AI mentions that setup takes twenty minutes. Fewer people mention that setup never really finishes.

You create an API account. You set up billing. You generate a key. You paste it in. Then you pick a model, and picking a model means having an opinion about context windows and pricing per million tokens. Then a proxy goes down, or a model is deprecated, or your provider changes its moderation policy, and you are back in the settings working out which layer broke.

If you enjoy that, Janitor AI and SillyTavern are the correct answers and nothing here will change your mind. Genuinely. Control is worth something and you have more of it than any hosted platform can offer.

If you do not enjoy it, you are paying a tax in attention to get a feature you never wanted, which is the ability to choose between forty models when what you actually wanted was for one good one to already be running.

The honest comparison

Janitor AI RolePlaya
Cost model Platform free with your own key, paying your API provider per token, with heavy use reported at $20 to $50 per month. Janitor Pro at $9.99 a month since April 2026 Flat subscription, or a free tier. No usage billing and no per-token cost
Setup API account, billing, key generation, model selection, occasional proxy troubleshooting Create an account and start
Uncensored access Limitless Mode, ID verification required since late 2025 18+ with a self-declared age gate. No documents uploaded
Model control Total. Any model your provider offers Three tiers, each unlocking a set of models. Far less control
Character cards Native, huge community catalogue PNG and JSON import, V2 and V3 specs
Memory Depends entirely on the model and context window you configure Characters remember earlier conversations, handled for you
Mobile Web only, no app Progressive web app, plus a self-hosted Android APK

Bring your cards, they import directly

This is the part that matters most if you are coming from Janitor AI, because unlike Character.AI users you are not starting from nothing. Your characters already exist as files.

RolePlaya imports PNG character cards and JSON directly in the creator, including V2 and V3 specs, nested data objects and the usual field aliases. Name, greeting, personality, scenario and description map across on their own. A card image becomes the avatar in the same step.

Read the result before saving. A card written against a different prompt style usually has quirks worth trimming, and the ones built for API-key setups often carry instructions aimed at a specific model that will not mean anything here.

No key, no bill, no documents

Create an account and start. The free tier carries no advertising and nothing to configure. If you want to know whether a managed model holds a scene as well as the one you set up yourself, importing one card is enough to find out.

What you give up

Straight about this, because pretending otherwise would be insulting to an audience that reads API documentation for fun.

  • Model choice. You pick from what your tier unlocks rather than everything your provider offers. If you have strong opinions about which model writes best, you will find that restrictive.
  • Prompt control. You do not get to rewrite the system prompt. There is a prompt layer doing real work underneath, tuned over a year, and it is not exposed.
  • Catalogue size. Janitor AI's community catalogue is enormous and ours is thousands. Cards import easily, but you are bringing them rather than browsing them.
  • The tinkering itself. For some people the configuring is half the hobby. If that is you, this will feel like a worse product, not a simpler one.

Where each one is the right answer

Stay with Janitor AI if you already have a working setup, you like choosing models, the ID verification does not bother you, and the token spend is money you are happy to spend.

Look at SillyTavern instead if your real complaint is that Janitor AI is hosted at all. Running locally with your own backend beats every hosted platform on control, permanently, and no company can change the rules on you.

Try RolePlaya if you want the roleplay without the infrastructure. One flat cost, nothing to configure, cards import in seconds, and no identity documents to unlock adult content.

Frequently asked questions

Does RolePlaya need an API key?

No. Models run on the platform and are included in the subscription. There is nothing to connect, nothing to configure and no per-token billing.

Do I have to verify my identity?

No documents are uploaded. RolePlaya is 18+ with a self-declared age gate, the same standard most of the category uses. We are not going to claim that is rigorous verification, but it does not involve sending anyone your passport.

Can I import my Janitor AI character cards?

Yes. PNG cards and JSON both import directly in the character creator, including V2 and V3 specs. Fields map across automatically.

Can I choose the model?

You can choose from the models your tier unlocks, and the message bar shows which one is running. You cannot bring an arbitrary model of your own, which is the main thing you trade away.

What does it actually cost?

There is a free tier with no advertising. Paid tiers unlock more models plus voice and image features, and there are day passes if you do not want anything recurring. No usage-based billing at any level, so the cost is the cost.

What about Character.AI or PolyBuzz?

Different problems entirely. There is a Character.AI comparison here and a PolyBuzz one here.
