Character AI vs Janitor AI: Two Opposite Answers
Two platforms, opposite philosophies. One runs its own model and filters hard, the other hands you the plumbing and gets out of the way. Which suits you.
These two get compared constantly and they are not really competing on the same axis. One built its own model and controls everything about what it will say. The other built an interface and hands you the wiring. Almost every practical difference follows from that single decision.
Update, 13 October 2026
Character.AI has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is being sold at auction. It is still running for now. What it means for your characters, and what to do now.
The short version
Character.AI is the easier product and the more restricted one. It runs its own model, needs no setup, and will not do adult content. Around 20 million people use it monthly and send over 10 billion messages, so it is by a distance the largest thing in this category.
Janitor AI is the more permissive one and the more fiddly. It is an interface rather than a model, it allows NSFW, and getting good output generally means connecting your own model and paying a third party for it. It drew roughly 149 million visits in March 2026, so it is not small either.
If you want to write adult fiction, Character.AI is simply not an option. If you want something that works in one click on a phone, Janitor will frustrate you.
Side by side
| Character.AI | Janitor AI | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Platform with its own model | Interface that connects to models |
| Adult content | Not permitted | Permitted, behind an opt-in toggle |
| Setup | None. Sign up and chat | None to start, but good results usually need an API key |
| Free tier | Full access to the model, with queues at peak | JanitorLLM v2, free, queued, throttles hard |
| Paid option | c.ai+ subscription | Janitor+ at around $12.99 a month, or pay your model provider directly |
| Context | Undisclosed and modest | 128K on JanitorLLM v2, more on some external models |
| Apps | Mature iOS and Android apps | Apps since February 2026, but they open in Safe Mode |
| Library | Largest in the category | Over 3.2 million characters |
The filter is the whole story
Most people arriving at this comparison have already hit the Character.AI filter and are looking for somewhere else to go. Worth understanding what you are actually choosing between.
Character.AI's moderation is deliberate and the company says so openly. In a September 2026 safety post it acknowledged that being conservative sometimes means actioning content users think is fine, and that this is frustrating. It also removed open-ended chat for under 18s the previous year and describes that as one of its most significant decisions. Whatever you think of the outcome, this is a stated position rather than a bug.
The less obvious problem is direction of travel. Character.AI's recent company blog posts are about comics, a microdrama series, image models, creator spotlights and safety. Not one is about the chat model, its memory, or its context window. The product is not getting worse at roleplay so much as the company has moved on to building something else.
Janitor's position is the opposite. NSFW is an opt-in toggle behind an age gate, and the platform's own permissiveness is most of why people are there. But the platform allowing something and the model producing it are different things. On the free JanitorLLM, mature scenes are inconsistent. On a connected external model with fewer restrictions, they are not.
The cost nobody mentions upfront
Both look free. Neither really is, once you want quality.
On Character.AI the free tier is genuinely usable, and the subscription mostly buys you shorter queues rather than a better model. That is a straightforward deal.
Janitor is where people get caught out. The free JanitorLLM works for short casual sessions and throttles aggressively beyond that. Getting output people rave about generally means pasting in an API key and paying a provider per token. DeepSeek is close to free, Claude Haiku is cheap, GPT-4 class models cost a cent or two per message. That sounds trivial until you are forty messages into an evening, and it means your bill scales with how much you enjoy it.
It also means a second account, a second billing relationship, and a setup process that is the single biggest source of confusion in this hobby. We wrote separately about the rate limit errors that come with it and how to work out which part of the chain broke.
Apps, and the Safe Mode catch
Character.AI has had proper apps for years and they are good.
Janitor launched native iOS and Android apps in February 2026, which sounds like it closes the gap. It does not, quite. The apps open in a restricted Safe Mode to satisfy Apple and Google policies, and the NSFW toggle can only be enabled from the website. So the thing most people use Janitor for is the thing the app will not do until you go to a browser and turn it on.
This is not Janitor being awkward. Any platform listed in an app store inherits that store's content rules, which is why several adult-facing platforms stay off them entirely.
Privacy and your data
A genuine difference here, and it runs in Janitor's favour if you use it the harder way.
JanitorLLM's terms permit anonymised conversation samples to be used for training. If you connect your own API key instead, Janitor becomes a pass-through and your chat content falls under your model provider's policy rather than Janitor's. Staff have said that individual conversations are not read, with automated systems flagging violations and humans reviewing only what gets flagged.
Character.AI processes everything on its own infrastructure under its own policy. Simpler, with less choice.
Neither uses end to end encryption, because no platform in this category can. The model has to read the text to reply to it. We covered what platforms can actually see in more detail separately.
Age verification
Since 30 March 2026, Janitor requires third-party ID checks for users in Brazil and Australia, following Brazil's Digital ECA law and Australia's under-16 restrictions. Every other region is still on a self-declared checkbox for now.
Character.AI removed open-ended character chat for under 18s in 2025 and has been ahead of most of the category on this.
Expect both positions to keep moving. Roughly fourteen new state laws landed in 2026 alone, and the direction is consistent even where the detail differs.
Which one
- Pick Character.AI if you want zero setup, you are writing SFW, you value the largest character library, and short character-led sessions suit you better than long campaigns.
- Pick Janitor AI if you want adult content, you are willing to configure a model and pay a provider, and you would rather have control than convenience.
- Pick neither if what you actually want is adult roleplay that works without an API key, which is the gap both of them leave.
That third option
RolePlaya was built for exactly that gap. Models run server side, so there is no key to generate and no per-token bill, and it is adults only with no filter tightening quietly over time. It is a website and a progressive web app rather than an app store listing, which is why there is no Safe Mode to work around.
The trade is honest: you do not get to pick the model. That is the price of not having to.
Common questions
Is Janitor AI better than Character AI?
They solve different problems. Character.AI is easier and filters adult content entirely. Janitor AI permits it but usually needs an external API key and a paid model provider for good output. If you want NSFW, Character.AI is not an option. If you want one-click simplicity, Janitor will frustrate you.
Is Janitor AI free?
The platform is, and JanitorLLM v2 costs nothing, though it is queued and throttles aggressively. Most people who stay end up either subscribing to Janitor+ at around $12.99 a month or paying a model provider directly per message.
Why does the Janitor AI app not allow NSFW?
The apps launched in February 2026 and open in a restricted Safe Mode to comply with Apple and Google store policies. The NSFW toggle has to be enabled from the website, after which the setting applies on mobile too.
Why has Character AI got worse at roleplay?
The company has been building elsewhere. Its recent blog posts cover comics, video, image models and safety, with nothing about the chat model, memory or context window. It also states openly that conservative moderation sometimes actions content users consider acceptable.
Do I need an API key for Janitor AI?
Not to start. The built-in free model works without one. Most people connect an external key eventually because the free model is inconsistent and heavily throttled, and that is where the real cost and the setup difficulty come in.
