Character.AI vs PolyBuzz: An Honest Comparison

Filters, adverts, memory and money. A comparison neither platform will ever write about the other.

Neither of these two will ever write this comparison fairly about the other, and most of the ones online are affiliate pages ranking whoever pays best. This is written by someone who builds a competing platform, which is its own kind of bias, so the deal is this: everything below is sourced from public reporting and user accounts, and RolePlaya does not appear until the final section. Read the comparison, skip the last bit if you want.

Update, 16 October 2026

Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 12 October 2026 and is still running while it is sold at auction. What it means for your characters. PolyBuzz has been reported missing from Apple's App Store in many regions since December 2025, with no public reason given. Its website still works.

The short version

Character.AI is the better product and the more restricted one. Bigger catalogue, better polish, more refined writing, and a filter that has tightened every year and will keep tightening.

PolyBuzz is the looser one and the more commercial one. More permissive content, a far bigger library, mobile-first, and a monetisation model that will interrupt you constantly until you pay, then keep prompting after you have.

If you want polish and do not need adult content, Character.AI. If you want fewer refusals and can tolerate advertising, PolyBuzz. That is genuinely the whole decision, and the rest of this page is the evidence.

Scale and direction of travel

Character.AI is reported to have fallen from roughly 28 million monthly active users in mid-2024 to around 20 million by early 2026, with its valuation dropping from about $2.5 billion to roughly $1 billion. PolyBuzz has been growing over the same period, with an estimated 42.8 million monthly visits by early 2026 and a library of more than 20 million characters.

That crossover is the story of the category. One platform is losing users to policy, the other is gaining them by being looser and accepting the advertising trade.

Content policy

Character.AI's timeline is a chain of tightening decisions, each defensible on its own:

  • November 2025: open-ended chat removed for all users under 18, following wrongful death litigation.
  • April 2026: face-scan age verification introduced.
  • May 2026: metering and usage limits applied to free chats.
  • Throughout: filters that users report tripping on non-explicit content, including emotional intimacy, conflict and fictional violence.

PolyBuzz sits looser but is not unfiltered. Its filter is enforced server-side, which means it can tighten at any time and a paid subscription does not lock in the capability you bought. Users also report a content violation system that flags their own characters and profiles without a clear explanation, sometimes retroactively after platform updates.

The pattern underneath both is identical and worth understanding before you pick either. Both ship through app stores. Both answer to review boards, advertisers and, increasingly, courts. For any platform in that position the cost of under-filtering is an existential lawsuit and the cost of over-filtering is annoyed users. Filters in that situation only ever move one direction.

Money

This is where they differ most and where most comparisons are least useful.

Character.AI runs a straightforward subscription. c.ai+ is reported at $9.99 a month, which is the cheapest premium tier among the major platforms, and free access has been metered since May 2026.

PolyBuzz is free at the door and monetised throughout. Free users report a "Take a Little Break" prompt roughly every five messages, where the choice is watch an advert or upgrade. Subscriptions are reported from around $9.90 to $29.90 a month, and above that sits a separate coin economy for one-off features. Paying removes the adverts. It does not remove the prompts to spend.

There is also a quieter difference. Free PolyBuzz accounts run an older language model than subscribers, and that gap widened after the 2026 update moved newer models behind the paywall. Nothing on screen tells a free user this, so people who find the writing shallow often blame the technology rather than the tier.

Memory

Both are criticised for it and the mechanisms differ.

Character.AI users have complained for years about characters forgetting things said a handful of messages earlier. PolyBuzz gates memory by tier: lower tiers keep a limited context window and prune older messages silently, with permanent memory sold at the top tier. That pruning is where most "PolyBuzz deleted my chat" reports come from. Nothing was deleted. It fell out of the window.

Which should you pick

Character.AI if: you want the most polished writing, you are building safe-for-work stories, you value a curated catalogue, or you are under 18, in which case it is the only one of the two that is trying to be appropriate for you.

PolyBuzz if: you want a huge library and a mobile app, you find Character.AI's filter unusable, and adverts are an acceptable price for that.

Neither if: the thing you actually want is adult roleplay that stays uninterrupted, because neither is built for that. Character.AI does not permit it at all. PolyBuzz tolerates it while monetising the interruptions around it.

The third option, and this is the biased bit

RolePlaya exists because of the structural point made earlier. Filters tighten when a platform answers to an app store, an advertiser or a courtroom. So it answers to none of them. There is no Google Play listing, no App Store review, no advertising on any tier, and it is funded directly by subscribers.

That is not a claim to be better than either platform above. Character.AI has a bigger catalogue and more polish. PolyBuzz has native mobile apps and twenty million characters. RolePlaya has thousands, is built by one person, and will never be in an app store.

What it does have is a structure where the answer to "will this get more restricted next year" is different, because the mechanisms that drove the tightening at both platforms above are not present.

If neither of the above fits

Free tier, daily message allowance, no adverts, no coin economy, and character cards import directly as PNG or JSON. Ten minutes tells you whether it holds a scene better than what you are using.

Frequently asked questions

Is PolyBuzz still on the App Store?

PolyBuzz has been reported missing from Apple's App Store in many regions since December 2025, with no public reason given. Its website still works. Character.AI is still on the App Store but filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 12 October 2026 and is being sold at auction.

Is PolyBuzz less censored than Character.AI?

Yes, meaningfully so. PolyBuzz tolerates mature content in private chat while Character.AI does not permit explicit content at all, including on its paid tier. PolyBuzz's filter is still enforced server-side and can tighten without notice.

Which is better for long roleplay?

Character.AI writes better prose. PolyBuzz interrupts less on the filter but more on adverts unless you pay. For genuinely long scenes the advert breaks tend to be the bigger problem, since they land mid-conversation rather than between sessions.

Can I move my characters between them?

No. Neither platform offers a character export, so anything you want to keep has to be copied out by hand before you leave.

Which is safer for a teenager?

Character.AI, clearly. It bans under-18s from open-ended chat and verifies age. PolyBuzz prohibits under-18 use in its terms but its web version is rated 14+ while its apps are 17+ and 18+, and one reviewer signing up on the web was never asked for an age at all. Common Sense Media and Stanford's Brainstorm Lab have assessed AI companion apps as posing unacceptable risks for minors generally.
