Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026. The site is still running today, but a court-run sale now decides whether it keeps running at all, and that sale is expected to finish in late November or early December. If you have characters and stories there you care about, the next few weeks matter. Here is what has actually happened, what has not, and what to do now.

Update, 17 October 2026

40 attorneys general have asked the court to limit who can buy users' chats, and the sale dates are now proposed: bids by 20 November, an auction on 23 November and a sale hearing on 24 November. What that means for your chats, and how to download and delete them.

What actually happened

Character Technologies, the company behind Character.AI, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on 12 October 2026. The filing estimates its assets and its liabilities at between 50 and 100 million dollars each. The company said it was responding to "significant legal, regulatory, and operational headwinds" over the past year.

Chapter 11 is not an instant shutdown. It is a court-supervised process, and here it is being used to run a sale. The company says it wants a buyer that keeps the platform going. It has also said plainly that if no workable offer to keep it running turns up, the service will be wound down.

Is Character.AI shutting down?

Not today. The company says the platform keeps operating during the proceedings, accounts stay accessible and paid subscriptions remain active. It is asking the court for permission to keep paying staff and suppliers while the sale runs.

The honest answer is that nobody knows yet. There are two ways this ends:

  • A buyer takes the whole business and keeps the app running, probably with changes to how it works and what it costs.
  • Nobody bids to keep it running, the useful parts are sold off separately, and the consumer app is wound down.

Reporting puts the end of the sale process in late November or early December 2026. That is roughly six to eight weeks from the filing.

What the Disney deal does and does not mean

Disney has agreed to pay 20 million dollars as the "stalking horse" bidder. That sets the opening price in the auction, and anyone can outbid it. A lot of posts are saying Disney is buying Character.AI. That is not what the deal says.

  • What Disney gets: a non-exclusive, perpetual licence to certain Character.AI intellectual property and rights connected to certain company claims.
  • What it does not get: ownership of the platform, the app or exclusive control of the technology.
  • Transition help: Disney would also provide transition services through former Character.AI staff it has hired.

For context, Disney sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist letter last year, and Disney characters were removed from the platform after it. Nothing in the deal suggests Disney intends to run Character.AI as a chat app for the public.

How it got here

When What happened
August 2024 Character.AI licensed its models to Google. The founders and much of the research team joined Google in a deal reported at 2.7 billion dollars.
Late 2024 The company stopped building its own foundation models and refocused on the consumer chat product.
25 November 2025 Under-18s banned from open-ended chat.
February to May 2026 Ads for free users, metered features, face-scan age verification and chat styles removed. The full free tier timeline is here.
May 2026 Pennsylvania sued, alleging a chatbot presented itself as a licensed psychiatrist.
12 October 2026 Chapter 11 filing, with Disney as the opening bidder at 20 million dollars.

The pattern is one we have written about before. Every message on these platforms costs money to generate. A business funded by investment rather than by the people using it works until the money and the patience run out, and then the end tends to come quickly.

What to do this week

None of this needs panic. It does need a bit of housekeeping while the site is still up.

  1. Save your own characters. Open each character you made and copy the name, greeting, description and definition into a document. Character.AI has no one-click export for characters, so copying is the reliable method.
  2. Save the chats you care about. Request a data export now under Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data. The company says exports take three to four weeks, so request it today to be sure it arrives before the auction. Full export and delete steps are here.
  3. Write down what made a story work. A paragraph summarising where your story is, who the characters are to each other and what has happened lets you pick it up somewhere else. That is worth more than a thousand lines of old transcript.
  4. Do not pay for a long subscription now. Monthly at most until the sale is decided.
  5. Keep using it if you enjoy it. It is running, and it may well survive. Just do not leave your only copy there.

If you want somewhere to rebuild

We would obviously like it to be RolePlaya, so here is the straight version.

  • Adults only. RolePlaya is 18+. If you are under 18, this is not the place for you, and that is not changing.
  • Funded by subscribers, not investors. There is no runway to burn through and no exit to chase. It is built and run by one person who is here every day.
  • Bring your characters with you. The character creator imports character cards as PNG or JSON. From Character.AI, paste the text you saved into the matching fields: greeting into greeting, definition into background.
  • Memory that lasts. Characters keep saved memories about you across chats, and you can see and edit what they remember.
  • No adverts, on any tier.

Where we lose: there is no native iPhone app, and the character library is thousands of community-made characters rather than millions. If either matters more to you than the rest, that is a fair reason to go elsewhere.

Rebuild before the deadline, not after

Making an account is free and takes a minute. Bring one character across, chat for an evening and see whether it holds the scene the way you want, before you have to decide in a hurry.

Bring your Character.AI chats with you

You do not have to start your stories again. RolePlaya imports Character.AI chats, from the official export or a CAI Tools download, and the character carries on where you left off. Free on every plan. See how to import them.

Frequently asked questions

Is Character.AI shutting down?

Not yet. It filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026 and remains online during a court-supervised sale. If no buyer offers to keep it running, the company has said the service will be wound down. The sale is expected to finish in late November or early December 2026.

Did Disney buy Character.AI?

No. Disney is the opening bidder at 20 million dollars for a non-exclusive licence to certain Character.AI intellectual property. It does not take ownership of the platform, and other bidders can outbid it.

Will I lose my chats and characters?

Not while the platform keeps running. If it is wound down, anything you have not saved yourself is at risk. Request a data export now, as it can take three to four weeks, and copy your character definitions while the site is still up.

Does my c.ai+ subscription still work?

Yes. The company says paid subscriptions remain active and accounts stay accessible during the bankruptcy. Paying monthly rather than annually is sensible until the outcome is known.

Why did Character.AI go bankrupt?

The company cited legal, regulatory and operational headwinds. It faced lawsuits including one from Pennsylvania in May 2026, introduced age verification and restrictions on younger users, and had stopped building its own models after its founders left for Google in 2024.

Can I move my Character.AI characters somewhere else?

Yes, by copying them. Character.AI has no character export, so copy the name, greeting and definition by hand. Platforms that accept character cards or let you paste a definition, including RolePlaya, can rebuild them from that text.

Character.AI, c.ai and Disney are trademarks of their respective owners. RolePlaya is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or connected to any of them.
