What Happened to the Character.AI Free Tier in 2026
Ads in February, metering in March, styles removed in May, then a partial reversal in September. What the free tier actually gives you now.
If you have been using Character.AI for a while and it feels different, you are right, and it has changed four separate times this year. Here is the actual sequence with dates, including the part in September that went the other way.
Update, 13 October 2026
Character.AI has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is being sold at auction. It is still running for now. What it means for your characters, and what to do now.
The timeline
| When | What changed |
|---|---|
| February 2026 | Mid-chat ads begin rolling out to free users |
| March 2026 | Swipes, Go-ons and Memos become metered for free accounts through the Charms currency. A 400 daily swipe limit expands to more regions |
| 8 May 2026 | Nine legacy chat styles removed. PipSqueak 2 becomes the forced default for free users. Soft Launch moves behind the c.ai+ paywall |
| 28 September 2026 | PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak launch free for everyone. A new middle tier, c.ai lite, appears |
Three restrictions in roughly seventy five days, then four months of quiet, then a release that gave something back. That shape matters, and most coverage only tells you about one half of it.
What the free tier actually gives you now
- Unlimited messaging. Still true, on every tier, and the company restated it in September.
- PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak. Both free, both rolled out to everyone, with no special limits attached.
- Mid-chat ads. Still there. This is the main thing the paid tiers remove.
- Charms metering. Swipes, Go-ons and Memos remain capped, with Charms as the top-up mechanism.
- Peak-hour slow mode. Still applies.
- Basic memory. Fewer pins than paid tiers, and the fuller memory suite stays on c.ai+.
The tiers, as they stand
| Tier | What you get |
|---|---|
| Free | Unlimited messaging, PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak, mid-chat ads, Charms metering on swipes and Go-ons, basic memory |
| c.ai lite | $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week, with regional price differences. No banner ads and fewer interstitials, a daily allowance of premium styles like DeepSqueak and LongSqueak, better memory, chat customisation |
| c.ai+ | Around ten dollars a month. Unlimited premium chats, no ads at all, the full memory suite |
The interesting thing about c.ai lite is what it is selling. Its headline benefits are fewer ads and a daily taste of the better styles. A tier whose main value is partial relief from advertising only makes sense once advertising is an established part of the free experience, which is the clearest signal of where the product is heading.
Reading it fairly
It would be easy to write this as a straight decline story and plenty of people have. That is not quite right.
The case for Character.AI: running inference for 20 million monthly users is genuinely expensive, the company has always offered unlimited messaging and has kept that promise, and September gave free users the newest styles immediately rather than making them wait. Plenty of platforms would have made PipSqueak 3 a subscriber perk.
The case against: the squeeze in the first half of the year was real, it arrived without much announcement, and metering a swipe is metering the thing roleplayers do constantly. When 404 Media covered the backlash in May, the word it reached for was enshittification, and the Reddit threads were not subtle.
The honest summary is that the free tier is now ad-supported and metered at the edges while remaining unlimited at the core. Whether that is generous or degraded depends entirely on whether you remember what it used to be.
What this tells you about the direction
The pattern across the year is a platform optimising for a mainstream audience rather than a roleplay audience. ShortSqueak is the clearest tell: a style explicitly built for quick texting-style chats rather than long scenes. That is a sensible product decision for a company serving millions of casual users, and it is not the direction of travel for anyone writing long-form fiction.
It also connects to something structural. Ad-supported platforms have to keep content advertiser-safe, which puts a permanent floor under how permissive the filter can ever be. A platform selling subscriptions can make different choices. A platform selling impressions cannot.
For what it is worth
RolePlaya carries no advertising on any tier, including free, and it never will, because the business model is subscriptions rather than impressions. There is no metering of swipes or regenerations, and nothing interrupts a scene to sell you something.
The trade is the obvious one: a smaller character library, one platform's model choices, and adults only. If you want the largest catalogue in the category, Character.AI still has it by a distance.
If you are weighing up where to go rather than just understanding what changed, the comparison with Janitor AI covers the two biggest options honestly, including when neither is the answer.
Common questions
Does Character AI have ads now?
Yes, for free users. Mid-chat ads began rolling out in February 2026 and remain in place. The c.ai lite tier removes banner ads and reduces interstitials, and c.ai+ removes advertising entirely.
Is Character AI still unlimited on the free plan?
Messaging is. The company restated in September 2026 that unlimited messaging applies on every tier. What is metered is swipes, Go-ons and Memos, which have been capped through the Charms system since March.
What is PipSqueak 3?
A chat style that became the default for new Character.AI chats on 28 September 2026, alongside a short-reply style called ShortSqueak. Both are free on every plan with no special limits, and existing chats keep whichever style they were started on.
What is c.ai lite?
A middle subscription tier launched in September 2026, priced at $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week. It removes banner ads, reduces interstitials, gives a daily allowance of premium styles such as DeepSqueak and LongSqueak, and adds better memory and chat customisation.
Why does Character AI feel worse than it used to?
Partly the metering and ads introduced through the first half of 2026, and partly direction. The newest free styles are tuned for shorter casual exchanges rather than long scenes, which suits a mainstream audience better than a roleplay one.
