Is AI Roleplay Private? The Questions People Actually Ask
What shows on your bank statement, who can read your chats, what gets stored and what deletion actually removes. Answered plainly rather than reassuringly.
These are the questions people ask in DMs rather than in public, and most platforms answer them with reassurance rather than detail. Here are the real answers, including the ones that are less comfortable.

What shows on your bank statement
On RolePlaya, subscriptions appear as ROLEPLAYA. The company behind the site is Onitek Solutions Limited, but the descriptor field is set to the site name, so that is what your bank prints.
That is a deliberate choice and it cuts both ways, so it is worth understanding rather than glossing.
A recognisable descriptor is the best protection there is against disputed charges. The most common reason anyone calls their bank about a subscription is that they do not recognise the name on the statement. Seeing the name of the thing you actually signed up for prevents that entirely. It is also simply more honest: you know what you bought, and the statement says so.
The cost is that it is not disguised. If somebody else reads your statement, they see the site name. If that matters to you, factor it in before subscribing rather than after, and that applies across this whole category rather than just here.
One thing that does help: nothing here goes through an app store, because RolePlaya is a website and a progressive web app rather than a listed application. So there is no entry in a Google or Apple purchase history, and no subscription sitting in your phone's account settings for someone to scroll past.
Descriptors vary enormously across this industry, and some platforms deliberately use a neutral holding company name instead. Neither approach is wrong. What matters is knowing which one you are dealing with, and the reliable way to find out is to ask support outright before you pay.
Who can read your conversations
The honest answer, which almost nobody in this industry gives plainly: yes, staff can access conversation content. That is true here and it is true of every platform you have used.
It happens in three situations. Automated systems scan for content that breaks the hard rules, principally anything involving minors. A moderator reviews content when someone reports it. And an administrator may look at specific data while investigating abuse, a billing dispute, or a technical fault you have reported.
What does not happen is staff reading conversations for entertainment. Not because it is technically impossible, but because it is a small team with a moderation queue and no time for it.
Anyone telling you their staff categorically cannot see anything is either running end to end encryption, which no AI roleplay platform does because the model has to read the text in order to reply to it, or they are being loose with the truth. The model provider processes it too. That is how the technology works, and a platform claiming otherwise should worry you more than one that says so out loud.
What actually gets stored
| Data | Why it exists |
|---|---|
| Your conversations | They have to be stored to be resent to the model. A chat that remembers anything is a chat that has been saved |
| Your email address | Account recovery and billing |
| Characters and worlds you create | Obvious, though note that public characters are public |
| Payment card details | Not stored. Card data goes directly to Stripe or PayPal and never touches the platform |
That last row is worth understanding generally. A properly built site never sees your card number at all. If a platform asks you to type card details into its own form rather than a payment processor's, that is a genuine warning sign.
What deletion actually removes
Most platforms say deletion is immediate and permanent. It rarely is, anywhere, and there are decent reasons for that.
On RolePlaya, deleting your account archives your data first, then destroys it. The archive exists because accounts get deleted in anger, by mistake, or by someone who emails two days later asking for it back. Individual conversation deletions are recorded separately and removed from your account immediately.
Backups are the part nobody mentions. Any responsible platform takes database backups, and those backups contain your data until they rotate out. Deleting your account does not reach into a backup taken last week. That is true here, it is true of every service you use, and anyone claiming instant total erasure has either not thought about it or is not telling you.
Practical discretion, whatever platform you use
Use an email address that is not your main one. Check the statement descriptor before you subscribe rather than after. Prefer platforms that are websites rather than app store listings if purchase history matters to you. And remember that the biggest risk to your privacy is almost never the platform's database, it is a shared device with a logged in browser.
Questions worth asking any platform
- What appears on the statement? If they will not say, that is your answer.
- Who owns the company? A named legal entity is a good sign. An anonymous domain is not.
- Is there a real contact route? A published address you can email beats a form that goes nowhere.
- What happens to my data if the platform shuts down? It happens constantly in this industry, and most terms are silent on it.
- Can I export my characters? A platform confident in itself lets you leave with your work.
On that last one, we wrote a guide to exporting your characters from any platform, including this one, because being able to leave is part of being able to trust a place.
Common questions
What shows on a bank statement for a RolePlaya subscription?
It appears as ROLEPLAYA. The company behind the site is Onitek Solutions Limited, but the descriptor is set to the site name rather than the company name, because a recognisable descriptor stops people disputing charges they do not recognise. It is honest rather than disguised, so factor that in if someone else reads your statements.
Can staff read my AI roleplay chats?
On any platform, yes, in principle. Content is scanned automatically for serious rule breaches, reviewed when reported, and may be examined while investigating abuse or a fault you reported. No AI roleplay service uses end to end encryption, because the model has to read the text in order to reply.
Does RolePlaya store my card details?
No. Card data goes directly to Stripe or PayPal and never reaches the platform. Any site asking you to enter card numbers into its own form rather than a payment processor is worth avoiding.
What happens when I delete my account?
Your data is archived and then destroyed. The archive exists because accounts get deleted by mistake and people ask for them back. Individual conversations you delete are removed from your account straight away.
Will it show up in my app store purchase history?
No, because RolePlaya is a website and a progressive web app rather than a listed application. There is no app store transaction to appear anywhere.
