Character AI Alternative: Where Roleplayers Are Actually Going in 2026

Why Character.AI lost eight million users, what the alternatives actually offer, and an honest account of where each one wins.

Short answer: it depends on why you are leaving. We have tried to be straight about where the other platforms beat us, because a comparison that says we win everything is worth nothing to you.

Update, 13 October 2026

Character.AI has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is being sold at auction. It is still running for now. What it means for your characters, and what to do now.

Why people are leaving Character.AI

The exodus is real and it is measurable. Character.AI is reported to have fallen from roughly 28 million monthly active users in mid-2024 to around 20 million by early 2026, with its valuation dropping from about $2.5 billion to roughly $1 billion over the same period.

The reasons are not mysterious. They are a chain of policy decisions, each individually defensible and cumulatively fatal to the experience:

  • November 2025: open-ended chat removed for all users under 18, following wrongful death litigation.
  • February 2026: mid-chat ads rolled out to free users.
  • March 2026: swipes and replies metered for free accounts through a paid currency.
  • April 2026: face-scan age verification introduced.
  • May 2026: legacy chat styles removed and a forced default model for free users.
  • September 2026: a partial reversal, with new models made free and a cheaper c.ai lite tier, though the ads and metering remain. The full free tier timeline is here.
  • Throughout: progressively tighter filters, with users reporting that non-explicit moments now trip the guardrails, including emotional intimacy, conflict and fictional violence.

There is a structural lesson buried in that timeline, and it is the single most useful thing on this page. When a platform answers to an app store, an advertiser or a courtroom, its filters only ever move in one direction. Under-filtering risks a lawsuit that ends the company. Over-filtering risks annoyed users leaving. Any rational board picks the second every time.

Which means the question is not "which platform has the loosest filter today". It is "which platform has a structure that lets it stay that way".

Why people are leaving PolyBuzz

PolyBuzz took the opposite route, mobile-first and free at the door, and hit a different wall. The recurring complaints in app store reviews and community threads cluster tightly:

  • Ads placed inside conversations rather than between sessions, with free users reporting an interruption roughly every five messages.
  • A coin economy layered on top of a subscription, so paying once does not end the prompts to pay again.
  • Free accounts running an older model than subscribers, a gap that widened after the 2026 update moved newer models behind the paywall.
  • Context limits on lower tiers that silently prune older messages, which is where the "it deleted my chat" reports come from.
  • A moderation system that flags users' own characters and profiles without clear explanation.

Their filter is enforced server-side, so it can tighten at any time and a paid subscription does not lock in the capability you bought. That is not unique to them. It is true of any platform that owns the model layer and answers to app store review. There is a fuller breakdown of PolyBuzz here.

The honest comparison

Here is where each option genuinely wins. Read the middle column before the last one.

Platform Best for The catch
Character.AI Sheer character library size and polish. Still the most refined product in the category. Strictest filters in the market, age verification, metered free tier. Not an adult platform and never will be.
PolyBuzz Mobile app convenience and an enormous catalogue. Genuinely usable free tier if ads do not bother you. Ad interruptions, coin prompts, tier-gated models, server-side filter that can tighten without notice.
Janitor AI Maximum control if you bring your own API key. Deeply committed community. Technical setup, ongoing token costs, and ID verification now required for its unrestricted mode.
SillyTavern The power user answer. Total control, runs locally, no company can change the rules on you. You are the sysadmin. Nothing works out of the box and there is no catalogue of characters waiting for you.
SpicyChat A big library and a very generous free message allowance. Adverts and a queue on the free tier, and memory of about twenty messages until you pay more. Compared here.
CrushOn AI Large working memory on cheap paid plans. Metered credits on every plan, adverts on the free tier, and free chats reported to expire. Compared here.
Chub AI The deepest character card library anywhere, plus lorebooks and model choice. Thin free tier, multi-month billing blocks, and a lot of setup. Compared here.
RolePlaya Adults who want long-form uncensored roleplay in a browser, with no app store, no ads, persistent memory and direct character card import. Smaller catalogue than the giants. No native iOS app. Built by one person, so features ship when they ship.

Bringing your characters with you

This is the part most migration guides get wrong, so it is worth being precise. RolePlaya accepts two import formats directly in the character creator:

  • Character card images. The standard PNG cards passed around SillyTavern, Chub and the wider community. Drop the file in and the embedded metadata populates the form. The image itself becomes your character's avatar in the same step.
  • JSON files. V2 and V3 card specs are both handled, including nested data objects and the usual field aliases, so exports from most tools land in the right boxes rather than needing to be untangled by hand.

Import JSON and Import Card sit at the bottom of the character creator, alongside dialogue examples and side characters.

Name, greeting, personality, scenario and description map across automatically. What you should still do by hand is read the result before saving, because a card written for a different platform's prompt style will often have quirks worth trimming.

The honest caveat: neither Character.AI nor PolyBuzz gives you an export. Anyone promising a one-click migration from those two specifically is selling you something. If your character lives on Character.AI, you copy the definition text out manually and paste it in. If it lives as a card anywhere else, import it in seconds.

What RolePlaya does differently

Three structural choices, not features. Features get copied. Structure does not.

It is not on any app store

RolePlaya installs as a progressive web app straight from the browser, and there is a self-hosted Android APK for anyone who prefers it. There is no Google Play listing and no Apple review process, which means no third party can require a filter change as a condition of remaining distributed. Every platform in the table above that ships through an app store is one policy update away from a tighter filter. That is the whole argument, and it is why the answer to "will you get more restricted next year" is structurally different here.

It is subscription-funded, not ad-funded

There are no ads anywhere on RolePlaya, on any tier, including the free one. Nothing interrupts a scene to sell you something. Playa Points unlock extras and you earn them daily, win them on the wheel or buy them if you want to, but they never get pushed into the middle of your story. The paid tiers unlock more, and there are day passes if you would rather not commit to anything recurring.

Memory is a system, not a context window

The most common complaint about every platform in this category is that characters forget. On RolePlaya, characters remember the important things from earlier conversations, such as your name, what happened between you and what you care about, and scenes pick up where they left off. It is not perfect. Nothing in this category is. But it is doing something structurally different from simply widening a context window and hoping.

Where we honestly lose

If any of these matter more to you than the above, go elsewhere and do not feel bad about it.

  • You want a native iOS app. We do not have one and will not have one, because the App Store would require exactly the filters we exist to avoid. PolyBuzz and Character.AI both have polished native apps.
  • You want twenty million characters to browse. We have thousands, built by our community, and you can browse every one of them here. That is still a different scale entirely.
  • You want total control over the model and prompt. SillyTavern with your own backend beats every hosted platform on this, including us, and it always will.
  • You are under 18. RolePlaya is an 18+ platform. Character.AI is the correct answer for you and we are not being sarcastic about that.

Getting set up in about ten minutes

  1. Create a free account. No card, no verification wall.
  2. Open the character creator and use Import Card or Import JSON if you have files. If you are coming from Character.AI, paste the definition text into the matching fields instead.
  3. Rebuild the scenario in the greeting rather than trying to reconstruct old chat history. A strong opening beats grafting on a transcript.
  4. Set the character to private for yourself, or public so others can use it. Public characters earn you Playa Points when other people chat with them.
  5. If you get stuck, ask in the RolePlaya Discord. Someone has usually rebuilt the same character already.

A note on platforms that vanish

Before you invest hours rebuilding a setup anywhere, check the platform is still running. Figgs AI shut down permanently at the end of December 2024 and is not coming back, though guides still recommend it. Xoul AI went dark for an extended period before returning. This category has a high mortality rate, and a lot of the "best alternatives" content circulating online was written once and never updated.

RolePlaya is funded by its subscribers rather than by venture capital, which means it does not have a runway to burn through or an exit to chase. It is built and run by one person who is still here every day. You can see the people building on it for yourself.

Try it before you rebuild anything

The free tier is enough to find out whether the model holds a scene the way you want. If it does, the paid tiers unlock more models plus voice and images. If it does not, you have given up no card details.

Bring your Character.AI chats with you

You do not have to start your stories again. RolePlaya imports Character.AI chats, from the official export or a CAI Tools download, and the character carries on where you left off. Free on every plan. See how to import them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import my character cards?

Yes. RolePlaya accepts both PNG character cards and JSON files directly in the character creator, including V2 and V3 card specs. Fields map across automatically and a card image becomes the avatar in the same step. Character.AI and PolyBuzz do not offer exports, so characters living there have to be copied across manually.

Is there a genuinely uncensored Character AI alternative?

No mainstream platform is entirely filterless, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling. The meaningful question is what a platform restricts and why. RolePlaya is 18+ and permits adult content between adults. It does not permit anything involving minors, real people depicted without consent, or illegal content, and it never will.

Is RolePlaya free?

Yes. A free account gets the full character catalogue, character creation and Dream Partner, with no advertising anywhere. Paid tiers unlock more models, long-term memory, Worlds and the visual and voice features, and there are day passes if you do not want a recurring subscription.

Do I need to install an app?

No. It runs in any browser. You can optionally install it to your home screen as a progressive web app, or use the self-hosted Android APK. Neither route goes through an app store.

Will the filters get stricter over time like Character.AI's did?

The reason Character.AI's filters tightened is external pressure from app stores, advertisers and litigation. RolePlaya is not on an app store, carries no advertising, and is funded directly by its users. That does not make it immune to anything, but it removes the specific mechanisms that drove the tightening elsewhere.

Do characters remember previous conversations?

Yes. Characters remember important details from earlier conversations, and scenes pick up where they left off rather than resetting.
