AI Roleplay Lorebooks and Worldbuilding, Without the Setup
Keep an AI roleplay world consistent without writing a lorebook. How Worlds, Character Triggers and Game Indicators compare with SillyTavern and NovelAI.
A lorebook is how SillyTavern and NovelAI keep a story world consistent: entries about places, factions, rules and secrets that come into play when the story touches them. They work well, but you write, tune and maintain every entry yourself. RolePlaya covers the same jobs with Worlds, Character Triggers and Game Indicators, with nothing to install and no model to connect.
What a lorebook does
In SillyTavern it is called World Info, in NovelAI it is the Lorebook, and many Chub cards carry one inside the card. The idea is the same everywhere. You write short entries about your setting, give each one keywords, and when a keyword comes up in the chat, that entry is brought into play so the character knows about it.
The cost is upkeep. You decide what each entry says, which words wake it up and how much room it is allowed, and when the story drifts you go back and adjust. For people who enjoy that control it is great. For people who just want to play, it is homework.
How RolePlaya covers the same ground
| What you want | On RolePlaya |
|---|---|
| A shared setting with its own places, history and rules | Worlds, with a name, description, lore and notes, and characters assigned to it with roles and relationships |
| Several characters who live in the same world | Worlds, plus Word Gets Around: characters hear secondhand about the big moments you had with the others and react to them |
| Secrets and plot turns that arrive at the right time | Character Triggers: up to 10 hidden story beats per character, firing after a set number of messages or when a described moment happens |
| Stats such as affection, trust, health or gold | Game Indicators, shown under each reply and changing with the story |
| Franchise characters who know their own canon | Canon-true franchise characters, where the creator's version wins wherever it differs |
| A world that remembers what happened | Story memory in every chat, Enhanced Permanent Memory with up to 150 memories per character you can see and edit, and Scene and Clothing Memory on paid plans |
| The same character at different points in their life | Timeline Link, connecting up to 30 versions of one character |

Bringing a lorebook across
Character cards from Janitor AI, Chub and SillyTavern import directly, as covered in the card import guide. A lorebook does not come across automatically, because on RolePlaya that content lives in a World rather than inside the character. Moving it takes a few minutes:
- Create a World and give it a name and description.
- Paste the most important lore entries into the World's lore and notes: places, factions, history and rules.
- Add your characters to the World with their roles and how they relate to each other.
- Move secrets and planned plot turns into Character Triggers, so they arrive at the right moment.
- Turn any stats the lorebook was tracking into Game Indicators.

Common questions
Does RolePlaya have lorebooks?
Not in the keyword-entry form SillyTavern and NovelAI use. Worlds hold shared lore and several characters, Character Triggers bring in secrets and plot turns at the right moment, and Game Indicators track stats, with nothing to set up.
Can I import a SillyTavern lorebook?
Not automatically. Character cards import directly, and lorebook content is moved into a World by pasting the key entries into its lore and notes.
Do I need an API key or a model provider?
No. Everything runs on RolePlaya, so there is no key, proxy or installation.
Can several characters share one world?
Yes. Characters assigned to the same World share its setting, and they hear about the big moments you had with each other.
Is worldbuilding free on RolePlaya?
Playing in public Worlds is free, with permanent memory. Building your own Worlds and writing Character Triggers come with Bit of a Playa and Total Playa.
Which is better for worldbuilding, RolePlaya or SillyTavern?
SillyTavern gives the deepest control if you enjoy setting things up and connecting your own model. RolePlaya does the same jobs with no setup, built for stepping into a world and playing.
