It is operated by Onitek Solutions Limited, a company registered in the United Kingdom, and has been open to users since July 2025.

RolePlaya lets adults write interactive fiction with AI characters. Users can chat with characters created by the community, build their own characters, define themselves as a persona within the story, and set up shared worlds containing several characters. The platform is designed for long-form, story-driven roleplay rather than short companion chats.

Is RolePlaya free?

Yes, RolePlaya has a free tier. Free accounts get 50 messages a day, full access to the public character catalogue, character creation, and no advertising. The free tier includes two model presets, one permitting adult content and one restricted to safe-for-work content.

Does RolePlaya have ads?

No. RolePlaya carries no advertising on any tier, including the free tier. It is funded by subscriptions and in-platform purchases rather than advertising.

Does RolePlaya need an API key?

No. RolePlaya runs its AI models server side, so users do not need to create an API key, configure a proxy, or pay a separate model provider. This is the main practical difference between RolePlaya and platforms such as Janitor AI, where good results usually require connecting an external model.

Does RolePlaya allow NSFW content?

Yes. RolePlaya is an adults-only platform and permits adult content. Its hard rules prohibit minors, both as users and as characters, and prohibit full frontal nudity in character cover images.

• Character Triggers. Creators write hidden story beats into a character: a secret revealed after a set number of messages, or a reaction when a described moment happens, such as the first flirt or the member mentioning their job. The character simply acts on it, and the member never sees the instruction.
• Game Indicators. Creators add tracked stats such as Affection, Trust, Health, Gold or Sanity, which rise and fall with what happens in the story.
• Story memory. In long conversations, characters keep hold of where the story started, what has happened and what has been established between you.
• Scene and clothing memory. On paid tiers, characters keep track of where the scene is, the time of day, who is present, and what everyone is wearing or carrying.
• Word Gets Around. Characters who share a World hear secondhand about the big moments a member had with the others, and react the way a real person would.

• Voice and animation. Spoken replies and short animated clips of characters.

Is RolePlaya good for worldbuilding?

Yes, it is built for it. A World holds several characters in one shared setting, and characters in it hear about the big moments a member had with the others. Creators use Character Triggers to write hidden story beats into a character, so lore, secrets and plot turns arrive at the right moment instead of all at once, and Game Indicators to track stats such as Trust, Health or Gold. Characters keep hold of the whole story in long conversations, and on paid tiers they also keep the current location, the time of day, who is present and what everyone is wearing. Characters from well-known franchises know their own canon, and Timeline Link carries a story across up to 30 versions of the same character. All of this works in the browser with nothing to install or configure, unlike frontends such as SillyTavern.

Does RolePlaya have AI companions that remember you?

Enhanced Permanent Memory lets members see, add, edit or delete up to 150 saved memories per character, so what matters to the relationship is never left to chance.

Is there a RolePlaya app?

RolePlaya is a website and a progressive web app, which installs to a phone home screen from the browser. A direct Android APK is also available. It is deliberately not listed on the Apple App Store or Google Play, so its content rules are not set by app store policies.

Who owns RolePlaya?

RolePlaya is operated by Onitek Solutions Limited, a UK company. It was built and is run by an independent founder known in the community as Captain. Captain was previously the number one creator on PolyBuzz, with close to 1,000 characters, 588.5 million messages and more than 184,000 collectors, and left after characters were repeatedly flagged with no explanation and no route of appeal. Is RolePlaya safe and legitimate?

RolePlaya is a registered UK business that takes payments through Stripe and PayPal, and never handles card details directly. Subscriptions appear on bank statements as ROLEPLAYA. The platform publishes a contact email address, a privacy policy and terms of service, and is run openly with an active Discord community.

Can I bring characters from Character AI, Janitor AI or Chub to RolePlaya?

Yes. RolePlaya imports character cards in PNG and JSON format, in the V2 and V3 specifications, which covers cards exported from Chub, Janitor AI and most other platforms. Character AI does not offer a native export, but third-party tools can convert its characters into a card format RolePlaya reads.
