PolyBuzz Alternative: For People Tired of Paying to Be Left Alone
The ad breaks, the coin economy and the model gap nobody mentions. What PolyBuzz costs you beyond the subscription price.
If your problem with PolyBuzz is the filters, the Character.AI alternative page covers that ground better. This page is about the other thing, the one nobody writes about honestly: what it actually costs you to use, in money and in interruptions.
The interruption economy
PolyBuzz is free to walk into and expensive to stay in. On the free tier, reports describe a "Take a Little Break" prompt roughly every five messages, where you either watch an advert or upgrade. Not between sessions. Inside the conversation.
Roleplay is the one format where that does maximum damage. A scene needs continuity to work at all. An advert at the wrong beat does not just annoy you, it deletes the thing you were building. Reviewers put it plainly: the adverts make the app feel unusable and the creators look desperate.
Paying does not end it either, because there are two currencies. Subscriptions reportedly run from around $9.90 to $29.90 per month, and sitting on top of that is a coin economy for one-off features. So the subscription buys you fewer prompts to spend money, not none.

The quiet part: free users get a weaker model and are not told
This one is not in any marketing material. Free accounts run an older language model than subscribers do, and that gap widened after the 2026 update moved newer models behind the paywall.
It matters more than the advert count. When a free user says the characters feel shallow or repetitive, they usually blame themselves or blame AI in general. They are actually describing a deliberately weaker product. You are having the conversation with a dimmer version of the thing paying users get, and nothing on screen tells you that.
RolePlaya has tiers too, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. The difference is that ours are named, visible and chosen by you. Free accounts get two model presets, Bit of a Playa adds three smart conversation models, and Total Playa adds four models built for explicit adult roleplay on top of those. The model you are actually talking to is named in the message bar, as in the screenshot above. Nobody is silently downgraded and then left to wonder why their story went flat.
Memory is the same pattern at PolyBuzz. Lower tiers keep a limited window of context and quietly prune what falls outside it, which is where most of the "it deleted my chat" reports come from. Nothing was deleted. It was forgotten, by design, and the design is a pricing tier.
What happens to creators
This is the complaint that turns a fan into a one-star review, and it is the least discussed.
PolyBuzz's moderation system flags users' own characters and profiles as content violations, frequently without a clear explanation of what triggered it. Characters that were fine for months become violations after an update. One user described logging in to find that all of their characters were suddenly in breach, alongside the sense that the bots themselves had got more restricted and worse at remembering.
Think about what that means if you build. You write a character, refine it over weeks, publish it, and the platform can retroactively decide it was never allowed, with no appeal you can follow and no explanation you can act on. You cannot fix what you cannot see. So creators stop taking risks, and the catalogue drifts toward whatever is safest, which is the opposite of why anyone came.
This is not second-hand. RolePlaya was built by Captain, who was the number one creator on PolyBuzz, with close to 1,000 characters, 588.5 million messages and more than 184,000 collectors. Characters across that library were flagged as violations day after day with no explanation and no route of appeal, and most of them were eventually deleted. RolePlaya exists because of it, and the full account is in Why I Quit Using PolyBuzz and Built RolePlaya.

The structural cause is not malice. It is that the filter is enforced server-side and can tighten at any time, and a paid subscription does not lock in the capability you bought. You can pay for a tier this month and find that tier does less next month, with no refund for the difference.
Trying to be two things at once
PolyBuzz wants app store distribution and an adult product, and those two goals pull in opposite directions. The seams show.
The Android app is rated 18+ and the iOS app 17+, while the web version is rated 14+. Because of that inconsistency, someone whose phone blocks the app can still open the website and sign up. One reviewer testing the web signup was never asked for an age at all, only an email address. And despite terms of service that prohibit under-18 use, Qustodio reports that PolyBuzz's own feature guide describes the platform as tailored for young users eager to explore virtual character interaction.
Separately, Common Sense Media and Stanford's Brainstorm Lab assessed AI companion apps as posing unacceptable risks for minors and recommended under-18s avoid them entirely.
We are not going to pretend a tickbox is rigorous age assurance. Ours is a tickbox too, and anyone telling you a self-reported date of birth is meaningful verification is selling something. The difference is not the strength of the gate. It is that RolePlaya picked one audience and stayed with it. There is no teen mode here, no family-friendly framing, no app store listing that needs a softer story told about it. It is an 18+ platform that describes itself as an 18+ platform everywhere it appears.
No adverts. No interruptions.
RolePlaya carries no advertising on any tier, including the free one. There is a points currency for extras, earned daily, won on the wheel or bought if you want to, but nothing ever stops a scene to sell it to you. The conversation runs until you decide it is finished.
Side by side
| PolyBuzz | RolePlaya | |
|---|---|---|
| Adverts | Reported roughly every five messages on free, removed on paid tiers | None, on any tier, including free |
| Second currency | Coins purchased on top of the subscription, prompted mid-conversation | Playa Points, earned daily, won on the wheel or bought. Never pushed at you mid-scene |
| Model transparency | Free accounts run an older model than subscribers, with nothing on screen saying so | Three tiers, each unlocking a set of models. You pick, and the message bar names the one running |
| Memory | Context pruned on lower tiers, permanent memory sold at the top tier | Scene state persists on every tier. Enhanced Memory addable per character, included on Total Playa. Worlds give a whole cast a shared memory |
| Creator risk | Characters retroactively flagged as violations after updates | Rules published up front. Two of them |
| Distribution | iOS and Android app stores, plus web | Browser and progressive web app, plus a self-hosted Android APK. No app store |
| Catalogue | 20 million plus characters | Thousands. Far smaller, and we are not pretending otherwise |
Bringing your characters over
PolyBuzz does not offer a character export, so anything living only there has to be copied across by hand. Open the character, copy the description, personality and greeting, paste them into the RolePlaya creator. Two minutes each once you have done one.
If your characters exist as cards anywhere else, it is faster. RolePlaya imports PNG character cards and JSON files directly in the creator, including V2 and V3 card specs, and a card image becomes the avatar in the same step.

Where PolyBuzz genuinely beats us
- The catalogue. Twenty million characters against our thousands is not a close contest. If browsing endlessly is the appeal, they win outright.
- Native mobile apps. They have polished iOS and Android apps. We will not, because app store review is exactly the mechanism that forces filters to tighten.
- Free tier reach. Their free tier is generous if you can tolerate the adverts, and their catalogue is vastly larger to explore with it. Which trade you prefer is a real choice, not a trick question.
- Company size. They have a team. RolePlaya is one person. Features ship when they ship.
Ten minutes is enough to know
Rebuild one character and run a scene. If the model does not hold it better than what you left, nothing is lost and you handed over no card details. If it does, the paid tiers raise the daily cap and unlock voice, images and Dream Partner.
Bring your PolyBuzz chats with you
PolyBuzz has no export button, but you can copy a conversation from the page and paste it into Import Chat on RolePlaya. The character picks the story up from there. Free on every plan. How to import a chat.
Frequently asked questions
Does RolePlaya have adverts?
No, on any tier. There is no advertising anywhere on the platform. Playa Points unlock extras and are earned daily, won on the wheel or bought, but nothing interrupts a conversation to sell them to you.
Do free users get a worse AI model?
Free and paid tiers unlock different sets of models, and we name them rather than leaving people to wonder. Free accounts get two model presets, Bit of a Playa adds three smart conversation models, and Total Playa adds four models built for explicit adult roleplay. The model in use is shown in the message bar.
Can my characters be flagged after I publish them?
The rules are published and short: everyone is 18 or over, character images must be originals, and cover images have no full frontal nudity. If something is refused, or a moderator asks for a change, you are told exactly which rule it is.
Can I import my PolyBuzz characters?
Not automatically, because PolyBuzz provides no export. Copy the definition text across by hand. If you have character cards from elsewhere, those import directly as PNG or JSON.
Is there a mobile app?
It installs to your home screen as a progressive web app from any browser, and there is a self-hosted Android APK. Neither goes through an app store, which is deliberate.
What about Character.AI?
Different problem, different page. The Character.AI alternative comparison covers filters, age verification and the metered free tier.
